Eighty years ago, on August 15, Japan announced its unconditional surrender. How did domestic and foreign media report this historic moment of Japan's surrender back then?

Hundreds of old newspapers and pictorials collected by Yang Xiangfei, a collector in Zhengzhou, vividly documented this scene. "The 'victory of the War of Resistance against Japan' is a core theme of my collection. Most of the collections are newspapers and periodicals published by countries around the world 80 years ago, and some are special editions and books published by major domestic media outlets and publishers to commemorate the event," Yang Xiangfei told a reporter from Dahe Daily on August 14. He said that the historical moment of Japan's unconditional surrender is of extraordinary significance. At that time, the news of Japan's unconditional surrender was not only reported by domestic media, but also attracted global attention.

Striking headlines on yellowed newspapers, from "WAR OVER" to "PEACE!"

In his living room, Yang Xiangfei laid out some representative original domestic and foreign newspapers from 80 years ago on the ground. These old newspapers, carefully sealed in storage bags, have all turned yellow, and some have become thin and brittle. However, the bright red "WAR OVER" and huge bold "PEACE!" on the front pages of the newspapers are still shocking to see today.

"This is the renowned United Pictorial during the war. You see, it says 'Japan's unconditional surrender' here," Yang Xiangfei said, pointing to a piece of newspaper. The reporter noticed that this pictorial also featured reports titled "Crush All Schemes of the Japanese Invaders" and "Japanese Troops Laid Down Arms En Masse".

"This is the Victory Issue of Anti-War Art, which reported that the governments of China, the United States and Britain declared Japan's unconditional surrender. This one is Eastern Pictorial. In addition, there are several scrapbooks of historical clippings here," Yang Xiangfei put down the newspaper in his hand and picked up an old thick notebook marked "August 15 Victory in the Anti-Japanese War" on the cover.

The reporter took the notebook and opened it, and found it densely packed with carefully arranged newspaper clippings, all reporting events from the eve of the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan through to Japan's unconditional surrender.

"After all, we went through 14 years of the War of Resistance against Japan. The historical moment of Japan's surrender is of extraordinary significance. That's why I've devoted so much effort to this theme from the very beginning of my collecting journey. The news of Japan's unconditional surrender was not only reported by domestic media, but also attracted global attention. Therefore, I asked my friends abroad to help me keep an eye out and collect as many historical materials of overseas reports on Japan's surrender as possible," Yang Xiangfei said.

The reporter observed that these well-preserved complete newspapers included Stars and Stripes, Los Angeles Daily News, United Pictorial, etc. Among them, many were special editions published on August 15, 1945, with most being influential publications of the era that mainly covered news across social, political, economic, and military spheres.

"This is the crown jewel of my collection, and also my personal favorite special edition. Look how well the layout is done!" Yang Xiangfei picked out the special edition of Nebraska State Journal from many newspapers. "The upper half of the entire front page is in red with large characters, which is particularly eye-catching. And while the reporting of the lower half is set against a background of the capital English letter 'V' representing victory. It's very creative!"

头版大标题为《Truman announces Japs agree to terms, to be no qualifications》,意为杜鲁门宣布日本已同意投降条款,且无任何附加条件。

This newspaper was published on August 15, 1945, in paperback, priced at 5 cents, and was a historic newspaper from the U.S. state of Nebraska. The front-page banner headline is "Truman announces Japs agree to terms, to be no qualifications", meaning Truman announced that Japan had agreed to the surrender terms without any conditions.

The reporter noted that there was a news flash on the front page of this newspaper about China's victory of the War of Resistance against Japan: V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day) will be officially announced after the signing of the surrender document. The three major allies in the Pacific War — Britain, the Soviet Union and China — will dispatch high-ranking military officers to attend the signing ceremony. Mr. Truman announced this news at 7 p.m. (Eastern War Time), shortly after receiving Tokyo's formal reply to the Allied surrender terms.

In addition, Yang Xiangfei also took out his treasured August 1945 issue of TIME The Weekly Newsmagazine, one of America's prominent current affairs weeklies. The cover design of this issue seems to be the Japanese national flag, and what is particularly striking is that the "red sun" on it is marked with a black "×". The reporter flipped through the magazine and found the content about the end of the war.

It is reported that Yang Xiangfei's residence houses various materials such as historical pictorials, illustrated books, Japanese military operation maps, and photos from 1921 to 1949. Over the past 33 years, he has traveled around and collected more than 100,000 historical materials.

"Materials on the history of the War of Resistance against Japan have been the top priority of my decades-long collection, covering various historical stages from the 'September 18th' Incident, the Lugou Bridge Incident, to the Nanjing Massacre, and finally the victory of the War of Resistance against Japan." Yang Xiangfei, who is the deputy director of Books and Periodicals Commission of China Association of Collectors, stroked these collections heavy with historical memories.

He said that in the future, he will continue to work on collecting more precious historical materials from the War of Resistance against Japan, so that these objects that witnessed history can be properly preserved. He also hopes that more people can remember that magnificent period of history through these collections and cherish today's hard-won peace.
