Chinese engineering giant sets sail for Sydney

As a flagship of China's advanced manufacturing, Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) produced in Henan are increasingly gaining recognition worldwide.

On the evening of August 5, a massive Henan-made TBM (No. 1459), independently developed by China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG), departed from Taicang Port, the largest port along the Yangtze River, bound for Sydney. This TBM is the largest-diameter TBM ever exported from China.

8月5日晚,万里长江第一大港——太仓港,由中铁工程装备集团有限公司自主研制的中国出口海外最大直径盾构机坐着育鹏轮远赴悉尼。



This TBM has an excavation diameter of 15.7 meters, a total length of approximately 113 meters, and weighs over 4,000 tons. Equipped with multiple intelligent technologies, it is set to be deployed in Australia's Western Harbour Tunnel Project.

这台“中铁1459号”盾构机开挖直径15.7米,整机长约113米,重4000多吨,集成多项智能化技术,将应用于澳大利亚西部港湾项目建设。

 

The machine took one year for design and assembly, and nearly four months for disassembly, transportation, and shipment. Making and exporting such a "giant" are no easy feat.

一年时间研发设计、生产组装,近4个月拆机发运、集港出海,这个“巨无霸”走出去可不是件容易事。

 

TBM is known as the "King of Construction Machinery". Its ultra-large diameter needs the advanced technical capabilities as well as significant transportation challenges.

盾构机被誉为“工程机械之王”。超大直径,往往意味着超高技术能力和超大运输难度。

 

"From material selection and welding to assembly, packaging, and transportation, the Australian client and contractors issued over 2,000 specific requirements, all of which we addressed one by one," said Liu Wei, production manager of this TBM. Since its completion on April 16, the machine has been disassembled and transported in batches using 152 specialized vehicles. It was transported by road and inland waterways via Zhoukou Port before arriving at Taicang Port for sea shipment.
