The Beginning of Summer is the seventh of the 24 solar terms and marks the first of summer. After Lixia, daylight hours increase, the temperature climbs, and thunderstorms grow more frequent as all living things enter their peak growth phase.

In China, Lixia has long been highly esteemed. Historical records tell us that on this day, the emperor would lead officials to the suburbs of the capital to hold a "Welcome Summer" ceremony. Among ordinary people, customs include weighing themselves, eating Lixia rice, and drinking tea.
