Reading China in 24 solar terms | Grain Rain
Grain Rain (Guyu) is the sixth of the 24 Chinese solar terms, marking the last one of spring. The name Grain Rain refers to the increased rainfall during this period. Timely and abundant rainfall is essential for crop growth.
During the period of "Grain Rain", people in China observe customs such as drinking Guyu tea, appreciating peonies, and eating Chinese toon, a seasonal vegetable. Chinese legend goes that Cangjie, the mythical creator of Chinese characters, had a deep connection to this solar term. In honor of this, the United Nations has designated this day as Chinese Language Day.
