The idiom is from A New Account of Tales of the World. During the Wei and Jin Dynasties, Ji Kang, Ruan Ji, Shan Tao, Liu Ling, Xiang Xiu, Ruan Xian, and Wang Rong often gathered under the bamboo grove in Shanyang County (today's Jiaozuo City, Henan Province) to talk about the past and present, and drink. They are known as the "Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove." Chinese people use the idiom to describe the communication between gentlemen indifferent to fame and wealth.
