The idiom is from The History of the Song Dynasty. During the Northern Song Dynasty, Yang Shi and You Zuo went to Luoyang (in Henan province) to ask their teacher Cheng Yi, a Chinese philosopher, for advice. They found Master Cheng was sleeping when they arrived at the house, so they stood outside the door in the snow, waiting for him to wake up. Chinese people use it to describe someone honoring teachers and education.
